Another Family Adventure, Lincoln Style...

Both kids keep us on our toes, constantly.  I imagine that all kids keep their parents on their toes.  It makes parenthood fun and interesting, right?

Lincoln is a boy and he acts like a boy but he's still pretty cautious, all things considered (Chris disagrees with me here).  Sure, I remind him at least once a day not to jump on the couch, run with a stick or stand on the edge of the stool but he rarely injures himself doing those "crazy boy things".  Rather, he waits patiently in the hallway, outside the bathroom door, for his sister to finish doing her business.  He's her shadow, after all.  When he hears the knob on the door begin to turn, and he anticipates her exit, he anxiously and playfully darts down the hallway to get back to their game.  Only, he doesn't make it past the door frame.

The kids and I spent the entire afternoon outside yesterday.  The weather was beautiful and they played and I worked in the yard.  We lost track of time, as we usually do when we're playing outside.  When we got inside it was already past dinner time so we cleaned up, grabbed a snack and the kids played while Chris and I chatted about the day and I got dinner started.  That's when Ava went to the bathroom and we heard Linc waiting for her in the hallway.  Then we heard a REALLY loud thud.  Like, it was so loud that I was convinced Lincoln somehow fell off the roof.  Then we heard him cry.  It was that *real* cry.  When we got to him he was holding his head and it was bleeding and he was hysterical.  Then Ava was hysterical.  She gets really emotional when Lincoln gets hurt.  After everyone got cuddles and reassurance (including me!) all was calm again.  Lincoln kept telling me, "my head really really hurts."  We considered calling the nurse line to see if he needed stitches but we didn't know how to describe the wound so we just decided to take him to the Urgent Care at the Children's Hospital.  The kids were exhausted and hungry and they handled the whole situation like champions.  It was just another family adventure...

Luckily, Linc's head wound wasn't too bad.  The doctor didn't think he needed stitches - just glue.  She said a band aid wasn't enough since it's a facial wound and our faces are so expressive so a band aid wouldn't hold everything in place well enough to heal.  Unfortunately, they didn't numb it first so he wasn't a happy camper when they washed it and glued it.  The nurse had to come in to hold him down.  It also didn't help that it was three hours past his bedtime and he was hungry.  He survived and we survived.

Today it doesn't seem like such a big deal.  He banged his head but didn't suffer any serious trauma.  It could have been much worse.  Our kids haven't had stitches, broken bones or serious illnesses (knock on wood) so we're pretty lucky.  Still, I think we've earned a new badge on our parenthood vests after this family adventure.

Here are some pictures from the adventure...

Playing in the waiting room...

 Poor Daddy...

 Still waiting...

 The wound...
(I still don't know how he did this just by running into a door frame)

Such a big, brave and sleepy boy...

 The "after" with the glue...

Ava was playing on her iTouch in the car on the way to Urgent Care and she drew this picture of the night's activities in Doodle Buddy...

Needless to say, we're laying low today.
Someone is being quite protective of his head.
