Great Granny

This week Ava and Linc’s Great Granny was visiting all the way from Florida! She kept us quite busy.

I learned how to make my Great Great Grandmother’s meat pie and Auntie Maureen’s delicious chocolate cake. I truly had trouble keeping up with the 81 year old; she kicked my butt! Granny joined us at the library for a puppet show for the kids. Ava had a lot of fun coloring and drawing with Granny too.

We were sad to see her go but we thoroughly enjoyed our time together while she was here!

We had a couple of cute moments between Ava and Granny:

Ava and Granny were coloring together at Ava’s table. Ava hopped up to run and get tape. While Ava was rummaging around in the drawer looking for tape Granny decided to hide with the intent of sneaking up on Ava when she returns. Ava excitedly ran back to the table, tape in hand, when she stopped on a dime and noticed that Granny was missing.

“Where did Granny go?” Ava asked me.

“I think she went to the bathroom.” I replied.

“Again?!?!” Ava exclaimed.

Gotta love kids!

I wasn’t around to witness this instance take place but Honey was thrilled to share the story with me soon after it occurred. Granny got herself in trouble for using one of the “S” words. Ava tattles on anyone who says “Stupid” or “Shut up.” Granny must have been describing something when she nonchalantly said “stupid” and she quickly found Ava at her side explaining why we don’t use that word. Granny apologized. Ava went on to say that her Daddy also said “Stupid” last night. Honey took the opportunity to jump into the conversation.

“What was Daddy talking about when he said ‘stupid’?” Was he talking about Honey?” Honey began to interrogate Ava.

“No, Honey!” Ava quickly replied.

“Oh, was he talking about Papa Bear?” Honey continued.

“No. He was talkin’ about Granny!” Ava explained.

I’m pretty sure Chris has been omitted from the Will.

(In all fairness, Chris never called Granny stupid. Honey obviously set Ava up for that one).

Finally, this is cute…

Granny to Ava: “How much do you love Granny?”

Ava: “Six months!”

And, here are some pictures.

"The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow..."

When I was a young lass I was infatuated with Annie. According to my parents and close relatives, Annie was a musical that I could watch repeatedly. When I was a couple years older than Ava is currently my Mom brought me to see Annie live! I’m certain that I was a bit too young to comprehend the plot, however, I imagine that I was subconsciously fascinated by Annie’s optimistic outlook on life and of course the music. I remember the auditorium, the stage and Annie’s fire red hair. I also remember my Mom walking me up the stage at the end of the show and giving me the opportunity to not only meet Annie but to have my picture taken with her. I froze. I absolutely refused to so much as look Annie in the eyes. My Mom tried and tried but I decided that I’d rather forgo an ever-lasting photo with my childhood hero than meet her and have my picture taken with her. Obviously, that makes no sense at all and I understand that now.

About a week ago my Mom gave me a newspaper cutout; it was an ad for Annie Jr. The show was being put on by a local non-profit children’s theatre and they’d be performing at our local library’s meager auditorium. The ticket prices were ridiculously reasonable and Ava’s admission was free seeing as how she’s only three years old. I was so excited to take her to her first musical, let alone Annie!

Chris agreed to put Linc to bed so Ava and I could have a girl’s night out at the “theatre.” She wore her halter dress from Aunt Courtney and I brought her shawl in case she was to get cold. We arrived 1 hour early since we had to buy my ticket at the door. Then we shuffled to the end of the line of anxious patrons waiting for the auditorium doors to open. Ava was so patient and only asked me a couple of times when the music was going to start. Finally we were allowed to file into the auditorium and claim our seats. Thankfully, I was able to score an aisle seat for Ava, which gave her a decent view of the stage.

Now we had to sit in our seats for 30 minutes to wait for the show to begin. Ava was sufficiently distracted by the bustle of people, the surrounding excitement and the musicians warming up with their instruments in “the pit.” I also used the time to explain to her about musicals and I tried to give her an idea of what to expect.

At long last, it was show time! I moved into Ava’s seat and propped her on my lap for better viewing. The curtain rose and a scene with about ten orphan girls piled two to each makeshift bed appeared before our eyes. Ava was instantly immersed with a look of complete awe slathered across her face. I don’t think she exhaled once before the first scene change.

As soon as the curtain lowered for that first scene change and the audience began to clap Ava swiftly spun her head around and asked in a worried tone, “Is it over?” When I told her that this was merely the end of the first scene she smiled from ear to ear and focused her attention back on the stage in total anticipation. We did this for about the first five scenes before she caught onto the pattern and I assured her that I’d let her know when it’s really over.

During our bathroom break at Intermission I asked Ava what was her favorite part so far. She replied, “I like clapping and I like it when Annie sings.”

Before we knew it, the show was over and Ava was quick to offer a standing ovation to the performers.

I had a lot of questions to answer for Ava on our way home. I chuckled when I found myself sympathizing with not being able to completely understand the plot but knowing that I definitely enjoyed what I saw nonetheless.

I think it’s safe to say that Ava enjoyed her first musical and I hope that she enjoys many more to come. I’m thrilled that I was able to share this experience with her and I’m even more pleased that I was able to share one of my childhood favorites with my daughter. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity for a photo with Annie...maybe next time.

As far as the performance is concerned, I was extremely impressed. I cannot believe the amount of young talent that was on that stage that night. I walked away with an enormous dose of hope and inspiration. Two thumbs up from Ava and Mama!

Soccer Graduation

Ava had her last soccer practice this morning. She did GREAT! She played the best she ever has; she's definitely warmed up to the sport. However, it was a challenge getting her out the door this morning...she did not want to go to soccer and she said that she doesn't want to play anymore. She agreed to go to her last practice and give it her best. That's exactly what she did!

On our way home we surprised the soccer-star by stopping at Chick-fil-A for milkshakes. She chose vanilla. This is her first milkshake ever!

While slurping on our refreshing milkshakes I asked Ava why she doesn't want to do soccer anymore and this was her response...

"Because I have to do stuff there and I don't want to. And it makes me dizzy."

Go figure.

One more thing - she picked out her soccer clothes this morning. She told me she wanted her "black shorts with the white stripe just like Daddy wears on the (el)liptical."

Flashback Friday

Flashback Friday is an idea that I've seen around several different photography blogs. After looking for a certain picture in iPhoto the other day I found myself lost for an hour browsing through all my old pictures. It was so much fun and I felt the urge to share with you. Today is the first Flashback Friday post. I have a folder filled with old pictures...no one is safe...no one is exempt from FB Friday...muwahahahahaha!

Remember Hush (Correction: POUND) Puppies & Nike knee socks?

Since Eric was kind enough to correct me in the comments section I felt the need to post this gem from my Flashback Friday photo album archive :-P

Ambitious

My Mom gave Ava a cookbook to bring home the other day with the following instructions: browse the different recipes and flag the ones that appeal to you then bring it back to Honey.

Here's the end result...

Looks like Honey & Ava are going to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

Smoothies & Dancing

Oh, it’s been an eventful week to say the least and I’m so thankful that it’s Friday! As mentioned in a previous post, Samantha & Tyler are spending the week with Honey & Papa. The girls have been playing together every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s a lot to handle – two 3-year-old girls and two baby boys. We’ve been keeping the kids busy but I fear that they’re keeping us even busier!

I have a lot of pictures but I think these videos are cute enough for now…

Both girls love smoothies.  Unfortunately, we didn't have any straws...as you can see they made out just fine.

Sam tagged along to Ava's story time at the Library.  They're "dancing" here...

Linc meets Family

We enjoyed another lovely family visit recently. Ava & Linc's Great Aunt & Uncle paid us a visit. This was their first time meeting Lincoln! He loved them! Both kids enjoyed the extra attention and love and I enjoyed Auntie Maureen's ridiculous chocolate layer cake...a couple times a day...every day... I'm having withdrawals.

A day in the life of...

I love being a Mom.  Sometimes the job is refreshing and inspiring while other times the job is cruel and amusing.  I use this blog as a journal and I intend to peruse it when I have an empty nest one day.  I also hope that my children enjoy it one day.

With that said, I’ve started the tag “Adventures of Motherhood” because some days are just too significant, for different reasons, and I’d like to capture them in this snapshot format so that I’ll never forget their worth.

This particular snapshot is an example of a rather nerve-racking day.  I’ll be sure to also share the sweet and inspiring stories as they occur.

Here’s a glimpse into my world, for those who care.

July 13, 2009

Today’s date should have been my first clue.  I should have hid under the covers of my bed all day.  Alas, motherhood was calling!

The day was immediately off to a productive start when I heard Lincoln complaining over the baby monitor at an earlier than usual time.  I hop out of bed to discover him grumbling in his crib and saturated in his urine.  The sheets are soaked as well.  His diaper overflowed.  I strip the soaked clothes off of him, strip the soaked sheets off the mattress and start a load of laundry.  Phew.  Lincoln is content sitting stark naked on the carpet in his bedroom so I run and fill up the bathtub for his much-needed bath.  I run back into his room to collect him for his bath and I find him nonchalantly sitting in a puddle of urine.  Seriously?  Argh.  I grab the carpet cleaner and work on the puddle.  I worry that the bath water is getting cold so we head that way next.  It’s a quick bath since he’s now hungry.  I realize that it’s late and Ava isn’t stirring yet…if she doesn’t get up now then she won’t be tired enough to nap later in the day which means she’ll be extra grumpy at night.  I gather Lincoln up in my arms and we merrily make our way into Ava’s room singing our “Good Morning” song.  She isn’t the least bit amused; it’s one of “those” mornings for her.

Once downstairs I begin making Linc’s bottle and Ava complains because she wants me to make her chocolate milk first.  Deep breathing.   Counting to ten.  In due time Ava has her milk and I’m feeding Linc his bottle.  It’s quiet.  I’m thankful.  Linc is in a better mood.  Ava is coming around.  I’m starving.  I nourish myself and catch up on some emails at the same time.  Everyone is happy again.  Today Honey is picking up Samantha and Tyler and bringing them back to Williamsburg for the week.  Ava is bursting with excitement and can’t wait to see her cousin.

We spend the entire day at Honey & Papa’s house and the kids play and entertain each other.  I spend the day changing diapers, making bottles, washing bottles, cleaning faces, wiping bottoms, teaching the art of sharing, reading books, doing dishes, folding laundry, and wiping yogurt and trampled green beans off the floor.  It’s all in a day’s work!  The day is wrapping up and Linc is preparing to fall asleep in Papa’s arms so I quickly tidy up the house and corral my kids into the van.  Linc is fast asleep before we’re out of the neighborhood.

On the way home I remember that our street in the neighborhood was due to be paved this morning.  The association warned us that they were going to close our street and we’d have to find parking elsewhere in the neighborhood.  Chris has class tonight.  I begin to ponder how I’m going to manage this with both kids and a van full of supplies.  Eureka!  I have the double stroller in the van!  Disaster diverted.  I think to myself that it shouldn’t be too hard to transfer sleepy Linc from car seat to stroller and eventually to crib.  I look in the rear view mirror to explain to Ava that we’re going to park somewhere else and walk home only to discover that she’s passed out.  She’s really passed out.  Oh boy, this adds a new element of difficult to an already complex situation.  Ava doesn’t wake easily or happily.  Well, she’s just going to have to wake up and we’re just going to muddle through it.  Thankfully, I find a parking spot one street over from ours and I hurry to get the stroller set up and loaded up.  I unbuckle Ava from her car seat and try my best to wake her up.  No chance.  I think, maybe if I stand her up but her knees buckle and she’s content to sleep in the grass.  It’s starting to drizzle.  Haha, of course it’s going to rain, it makes perfect sense.  I’m slightly panic-stricken now.  I conclude that Ava is going to have to ride in the stroller and I’ll just carry Linc.  My back is going to love this.

Now it gets comical…

I put Ava in the stroller and I quickly realize that she’s entirely too big.  Her legs are sticking straight out.  I laugh to myself because it’s really quite funny.  I run to grab Linc and notice that I have the Bjorn in the back seat of the car.  Score!  I strap him into the Bjorn and we’re ready to rock n’ roll.  We get to our street and we have to walk in the gutter so we don’t step on the wet and awfully stinky pavement.  The gutter is exactly the same width as the stroller.  Talk about walking a fine line!  I’m sweating at this point and the drizzle of rain feels refreshing albeit annoying.  The headache that I acquired earlier in the day is resurfacing with a vengeance.  I deem that this whole situation is ridiculous.  Oops!  We just came upon a drainage ditch and the front wheels of the stroller went every which way and caused us to stop on a dime.  We had good momentum and therefore Ava’s lower body was flung from the stroller by slipping under the tray and nearly beheading the poor sleepyhead.  Would you believe that she’s barely awake at this point?!  I try to instruct her subconscious to “move your butt back in the seat.”  She whimpers, “Help!”  I run to the front of the stroller to push her back into her seat except that I never put the brakes on the stroller so as I’m pushing her back into her seat I’m also pushing the entire stroller away and in the direction of the wet pavement.  Seeing as how Linc is strapped to my chest in the Bjorn, and I’m bent over in an awkward position trying to help Ava, Linc wakes up whimpering in discomfort.  Now I’m getting frustrated.  I put the brakes on the stroller and resolve the situation.  We’re back in motion and I have to carefully navigate over the next six drainage ditches.  Both kids are awake now and my head is pounding.  Ava is confused and is demanding to know what is going on and wants to know “Why is it so stinky?”

Our driveway is in sight!  Sweet, sweet, beautiful driveway, how I love thee.  I anxiously pick up the pace with my eyes locked on the sweet, sweet target.  I get everyone inside the house and I gulp a glass of cool and refreshing water.  I take a deep breath and turn around to discover both kids staring at me like zombies.  I wonder whom should I put to bed first?  I’d like to crawl into bed myself but that isn’t a viable option.  Ava irritably insists that I take care of her first and I think that’s a good idea given her mood.  Linc is happy to tag along in his zombie-like state anyway.

With a little struggle I get Ava to bed and I’m excited because I’m that much closer to medicating my head and going to bed myself.  I do a little happy dance.  It takes a while for Linc to finally surrender to sleep.  After he does surrender, I grab the bottle of Tylenol and start to make my way downstairs to fetch another glass of cool and refreshing water when I suddenly hear the sound of an approaching helicopter.  I stop to listen.  It’s getting closer and much louder.  Now it’s literally hovering directly above our street and it’s painfully loud.  Ava is screaming for me and Linc starts to complain.  The helicopter comes and goes several times in the matter of a minute.  I drop the bottle of Tylenol and run to comfort Ava.  She’s in a tizzy.  I get her settled and now Linc is angry.  I make my way to his room and cuddle his sweaty and worked up self.   I can still hear Ava calling for me.  I’m plain stressed at this point.  After getting Linc back to sleep I make my way to Ava’s room.  “Something is bothering me,” she pleads.  Ugh.  This is a stall tactic that she used to regularly use some months ago.  I truly don’t have the stamina to handle this right now.  I can hear my head pounding in my ears.  I do the best I can do which isn’t good enough for her right now; I explain that my head hurts and after I take some medicine I’ll check on her again.  This seems to suffice.

I run downstairs to finally take some Tylenol and remedy my poor noggin.  It’s quiet downstairs but there’s still tension in the air.  I sit in the recliner for a minute and I’m overcome with nausea.  I try to breathe through it but decide that I better sit in the bathroom to be safe; I could stand to empty my bladder anyway.  I grab the phone on my way because I notice that it’s 9:54 p.m. and Chris will be calling any minute and I’ll be damned if the phone is going to rip my zombies out of their not so peaceful slumber.  Sure enough, the phone rings as soon as I get to the bathroom.  I can’t get a break.  I answer, “Let me call you right back” and I hang up.  I stare at the bathroom floor and listen to silence.  I remember Linc’s sheets in the washing machine and realize that I need to transfer them to the dryer before I go to bed.  My body is telling me that it needs fruit so I peel myself up and visit the kitchen for some grapes.  I resort to the trusty recliner again and nibble on my grapes.  I’m starting to feel well again.  I pick up the phone and dial Chris.  “Hey!  How was your day today?”  he cheerfully asks…

7 Months

The little man is 7 months old!

Ava had a recent funny and smart comment...

"Daddy?  Yesterday I growed and I growed and I growed...like a tomato plant!"

and

"Mama!  I see a cardinal eating worms!  See it?"

Happy 4th!

Shortly after our visit with family from MA the Fescoe Crew arrived for more adventures and fun.  Of course we visited Busch Gardens and it was such a nice day!  We spent the entire day there with both kids and everyone did amazingly well.  It was so much fun!  We attempted to go to the Yorktown waterfront on the 4th but we didn’t last long because it was very hot and crowded.  We enjoyed a tasty BBQ at Honey & Papa’s house and finished off the evening with fireworks over Busch Gardens.  This was Ava’s (& Linc’s) very first time watching the fireworks.  She was trembling with fear but she didn’t complain.  When it was over and we were driving home she explained that she did not like how loud the fireworks were but she did appreciate their beauty.  Lincoln, on the other hand, loved the fireworks and even protested when they were over and I put him back in the car.  All in all it was another enjoyable visit and here are the pictures to prove it...
