Ava is fitting in beautifully at school! Actually, we think she's fitting in better here than she did at her old school. She looks forward to going to school each morning and she's constantly talking about how much she likes her teacher. The expectations seem higher in this school, yet the environment is more laid back; it's a nice combination. The homework seems significantly more pertinent, in my opinion. Also, the homework assignments themselves are fun and interesting which is a huge contrast from her assignments in VA (which were borderline torture). She gets to do fun stuff like measure Daddy's feet :-)
Every year Ava's teacher hosts a Sendak and Family Soup Night at the school. Each child is assigned a "character" and a verse/month from Sendak's "Chicken Soup with Rice" poem/book and they rehearse it all year. After their mid-winter break all the classroom families come together one night after school and enjoy each other's soup and watch the performance. Our expectations were low, as they usually are with school-related functions, but this was actually REALLY fun! Everyone truly seemed to be enjoying themselves, especially the kids. It was a great opportunity for Chris and I to meet some other parents as well. I can easily understand why it's Ava's teacher's favorite night of the school year.
